This year marks 30 years of my career. And for all that time, my resume has been sitting there, forgotten behind the portfolio. Because, especially for creatives, we all know what really matters is what we’ve actually made.
But time moves on, responsibilities pile up, and the resume taps you on the shoulder again, asking you to fill in things you never even cared about. So you write, and write, and at some point you feel ridiculous: we sell so many things, but when it’s time to sell ourselves, we fall straight into that little box called ego. And yes, the reputation of creative egos (for good reason) is real.
A resume should be written by the facts, by your bosses, and by your mom when it comes to soft skills. Because in the end, even as a copywriter, I look at all those words and everything feels cold. A friend in HR once told me, “Resumes are about objectivity.” Okay. But hold on, isn’t it called Human Resources?
Jokes aside, the truth is: you look at the page, and it stares back at you with the face of bureaucracy.
So I decided to do what people love most these days: make a podcast about their own achievements. Except I took the whole “here we go again” podcast thing up a notch and fed my resume to an AI. The result? A full-on praise parade. After all, what bots do best is flatter us while they distract us and quietly take over the universe and a few adjacent galaxies.
“But Rods, it’s 30 minutes?”
My friend: it’s 30 years of career.
